Security for Internet Users
Good security for internet users requires constant vigilance, common sense and a willingness to
learn. Just knowing that you can not trust everyone you meet online will go a long way in protecting
your privacy.
Security for Internet Users– Some basic tips…
Only buy from reputable sources that offer secure site transactions when shopping online. When you arrive at the
sites payment page, you should notice that the URL has changed from http to https. Also notice that the
lock on the bottom right hand of the page changed from unlocked to locked.
Protect your identity by not giving out any of your personal information such as: real name, gender, etc., when
chatting online.
Use passwords that are hard to guess and never give them out.
If you are unsure about an email just delete it. You shouldn't open email from unknown sources as they can
contain viruses, spyware, Trojans, etc.
If you use file sharing sites you should be aware that they are known to contain spyware.
If you have kids online teach them how to be safe online and don't give them unsupervised access to the
internet. Visit our Internet Safety Rules for more suggestions on
keeping kids safe online.
To properly protect your privacy you should also have a firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware programs installed
on your computer. In addition, you need to keep these programs, as well as your internet browser, updated
with the latest security patches.
