Malware is basicly malicious code and can come in the form of viruses, worms, spywae, Trojans, keyloggers, macro viruses, wabbits, backdoors, exploits, dialers, rootkits, etc.

Anti-virus programs protect you from viruses. Computer viruses are programs that infect other programs, and then spread (hence virus).  Some viruses also include instructions to damage an infected computer, or delete sections of the hard drive, etc.

Anti-spyware programs protect you from malware in the form of spyware. 

Spyware programs can gather information about you, your shopping habits, your surfing habits, your passwords, your personal information, etc., and then send the data collected to some company or internet scammer.  Your personal identity could be at risk.

A firewall is also a very important piece of software to protect your computer and privacy.  Firewalls make the ports on your computer invisible to hackers searching the web looking for an open port.  By using a firewall you are preventing outside access to your computer. 

Once you have these programs installed it is very important that you keep them updated with the latest security patches as they become available.  It is also important to keep your internet browser updated with the latest security patches too.
