Malware Definition – How Malware is Classified
There are many different forms of malware (malicious software). Here are some of the more well know
types:
|
|
Virus: A program that can
duplicate itself and infect other computers. Viruses can range from pranks to serious malicious code.
Viruses need some type of host to spread, such as an executable file, email attachment, etc. |
|
|
Worms: Another form of
malware. They are similar to viruses in that they can also copy themselves. A worm does not need a host
though. |
|
|
Spyware: A program that
collects information, such as surfing habits, spending habits, credit card numbers, social security
numbers, etc. |
|
|
Trojan Horse: Software that
looks legitimate but is actually malicious. Trojans usually trick users into thinking that they are
benefitual. Some Trojans can also spread other malware. |
|
|
Keylogger: Software that
logs your keystrokes and then may send that information to a hacker at a later time. Keyloggers are
used to get your login details, accounts numbers, PIN numbers, passwords, etc. |
Tips to increase your protection from all the various forms of malware:
All computers should have a good firewall installed. Firewalls make the ports on your computer invisible
to hackers searching the web looking for an open port. By using a firewall you are preventing outside access
to your computer.
Your computer should also have a good anti-virus program. Computer viruses are programs that infect other
programs, and then spread (hence virus). Some viruses also include instructions to damage an infected
computer, or delete sections of the hard drive, etc.
In addition to a firewall and antii-virus programs you should also install a good anti-spyware program.
Spyware programs can gather information about you, your shopping habits, your surfing habits, your passwords, your
personal information, etc., and then send the data collected to some company or internet scammer. Your
personal identity could be at risk.
Once you have these programs installed it is very important that you keep them updated with the latest security
patches as they become available. It is also important to keep your internet browser updated with the latest
security patches too.
